Patience Little Donkey

Let’s just wait and see.

My mother would say this to me nearly every day when I was a kid. She said it at least once a week until I was well into my forties. She will still say it if I’m waiting for something to happen.

I am the least patient person I know. I can be patient with people and animals, sure. But I’m not sure I ever completely grew out of the need for instant gratification.

I hate the phrase "let’s just wait and see." I’m like that lady in the commercial with her face pressed up against the glass door of a store saying "open open open.”

I try to will the thing, the waiting thing, into existence.

There are some things that cannot be rushed. They simply take however long they take to reach completion and fruition. I know this.

It doesn’t make it any easier.

Goats gestate for five months before kidding. Five whole months! Cows takes their sweet time waiting nine months before birthing. Bees take a full year to make enough honey to harvest. There are no shortcuts. There is no rushing nature.
