Marketing advice

I am taking the advice of those wiser than me. I am learning marketing skills. (Don’t get me started on website design and SEO and all the other stuff Ive had to learn the past two months!) I am putting my newfound skills to use marketing a newly formed business. My business. My writing business. Me. I am marketing myself. Cringe. I’ve never been good at salesmanship. Not that I’ve never tried.

I have had sales jobs.

My first sales job was telephone sales of magazines. Remember those phone calls? Back when it was real people cold calling other real people to sell whatever. No robocalls. No automation. Just me asking a random stranger if they’d like to buy 60 months of magazine subscriptions. I hated every second of it. I sold maybe two people on the idea and one of them was my mom.

My second (and last) sales job was as a high end used car salesman in Pasadena, Ca. Jags, Porsches, Beamers, and Mercedes-Benz. Fancy used cars. I sucked! I was always sending people down the street to the more reasonably priced car lot down the street. I’m sure that guy loved me. But he didn’t pay my commission. I quit after a few months. I probably sold 7 cars. One of them was to my best friend.
